Tips And Techniques For Effective Self Help | Meet Aniko Giampietro

If you're new here, you may want to subscribe to my RSS feed. Thanks for visiting!

Are you actively seeking a better life? Read this article for some tips on self improvement.

TIP! Find personal development books that are appropriate for your age and situation. A really good book on the subject may set you on a course that will change your life.

Sometimes a little risk could equal great happiness for you. Do not allow yourself to fear failure more than you desire success. Taking risks may take you out of your comfort zone, but it is not irrational to do so. If you take risks, chances are you will be happier.

TIP! An extremely important key to personal development is knowing what you want to do with your life. Choosing long-term goals will help you to gain the right perspective for finding success in life.

With any good personal development goal, you should be able to see the distance between your current state and the one you want to achieve. This is the best way to be able to set a course of direction to get there. By seeing your potential and where your life falls short right now, you set yourself up for success.

TIP! Everyone should strive to be the best that they can be. Passion leads to greatness, so be sure to be passionate.

Scrutinize your heart, soul and mind rather than being engrossed with your physical appearance. Some people are blessed with natural good looks or the wealth to purchase designer duds. It is your personality and character traits that are going to define who you are in life. Work to improve your inner beauty and self instead of concentrating on the superficial changes.

TIP! For many people, faith and love are the core components of personal development. This will help you focus on the things that are truly important.

Be respectful no matter how much, or how little, power the people you talk to wield over you. The treatment you show them is not a reflection of their character but of yours.

TIP! Strive to increase the time you spend working as much as possible in order to accomplish more. This can be achieved by taking frequent breaks from work.

A successful leader has the power to put their wishes into action, while also being humble of this ability. When rebukes are necessary, be gentle yet firm, and keep in mind that you must be able to serve to be able to lead effectively. The best leaders are virtuous and upright, since effective leadership requires great integrity.

The first step in changing is making a decision to change. Growth and improvement do not happen until you willingly embrace these changes.

TIP! Keep looking for new challenges you are interested in. These new challenges can open you up to new possibilities.

Look for reading material that inspires you and encourages you to be your best. In certain cases, this could take the form of religious volumes, in others, it could be a collection of historical quotations. Being able to return to these books to find words of encouragement when necessary can improve your state of mind, and permit you to deal with life?s tribulations better.

TIP! In your personal development journey, there is one thing that you must do. That one thing is you must choose to be an active person and live your life, not be a spectator.

Do not shop for comfort. If you spend your time doing some kind of a hobby instead of running up your credit card bills, you will find that you will not have those high credit card bills to stress out about. There will also be less clutter around your home to clean up.

TIP! If you are not able to achieve anything you wanted to, it is time to evaluate the situation seriously. Check online and find others whom share similar goals with you and find out what they are doing compared to what you?re doing.

People who are looking for personal development methods often make the mistake of setting goals that are too vague or too hard to target. Make sure that you set specific tangible goals. A specific goal will often achieve the desired results.

TIP! Always be ready to write down any ideas that you may have at any time or location. Carry some kind of paper with you at all times.

It shouldn?t be scary to make big changes in your life. Consider the benefits to your general well-being, and think of the happiness your life can have once you start taking charge of your life and changing it to be what you want it to be

Gillmor Gang: Platformicide

Gillmor Gang test patternThe Gillmor Gang ? John Borthwick, Robert Scoble, Kevin Marks, Keith Teare, and Steve Gillmor ? watched in amazement as Twitter made good on its promise to hobble the core of its viral power adopter developers and users. By shutting down third-party clients to focus monetization on its core clients and the Web, Twitter leaves itself exposed to its challengers for control of the realtime wave. To some of the Gang, Apple's move to eject Google Maps in favor of its own immature product seems similarly motivated and fated to bad results. But Twitter has historically made these kinds of protective overreaching moves in order to protect the fledgling company from being overrun by more powerful competitors. This time it's different, as Twitter releases services designed to capitalize on the innovations of its ecosystem. The real calculation is whether the openings provided to Google+ and, to a lesser extent, Facebook can be leveraged before innovation dries up in the Twitter pipeline. A high-stakes game of Chicken.

FILE - In this April 12, 2012 file photo, office workers leave the headquarters of Sony Corp. in Tokyo. Sony and Olympus have agreed on a business alliance that will see Sony invest 50 billion yen ($640 million) for an 11 percent stake in the embattled medical equipment and camera company. (AP Photo/Koji Sasahara, File)

TOKYO (AP) ? Sony is expanding its sprawling electronics to movies business empire with a new venture ? looking inside the human body.

The company on Friday said it will spend 50 billion yen ($640 million) for an 11 percent stake in Olympus Corp., an embattled maker of endoscopes, which are the long thin camera-equipped instruments that allow medical professionals to peer inside the body.

The deal was widely expected as Sony president Kazuo Hirai had expressed interest in moving into the medical equipment business.

Olympus Corp. is the world's biggest maker of endoscopes and is also known for its cameras. It has been on shaky ground after its British chief executive Michael Woodford turned whistleblower and helped unearth a scandal involving a systematic cover-up of massive losses.

Sony Corp. has its own problems and is hoping new businesses will be part of its turnaround. Sony has reported losses for four straight years as it fell behind in portable music players, flat-panel TVs and smartphones. Sony's red ink for the latest fiscal year through March was the worst in its 66-year history.

The two companies said they will set up a new medical equipment company together later this year, 51 percent owned by Sony and the rest by Olympus.

The alliance between Sony and Olympus will focus on the camera business as well, and both sides can benefit from sharing their technology, and working together to become more competitive, they said. In such alliances, companies can share in procurement on parts, boosting their bargaining power with suppliers and lowering costs.

"I will do my best to make this meaningful and profitable for both Olympus and Sony," Hirai said in a statement. Sony will become the biggest shareholder in Olympus after acquiring the 11 percent stake.

Olympus President Hiroyuki Sasa said working with Sony will help shore up Olympus' finances, and that its endoscope business would benefit from Sony's image-sensor technology.

Sasa and Hirai plan a joint news conference Monday morning in Tokyo, where they will likely face questions about how two troubled Japanese companies getting together might lead to them competing more successfully on the global stage.

Earlier this week, Sasa was at the Tokyo District Court to enter a guilty plea for Olympus, along with three former executives who faced charges as individuals, in the opening session of a trial into the fraudulent financial reports.

Olympus has said it hid 117.7 billion yen ($1.5 billion) in investment losses dating to the 1990s.

Prosecutors outlined in detail the elaborate schemes concocted over the years, using overseas bank accounts, paper companies and transactions controlled behind-the-scenes, all to keep massive losses off the company books.

Delta ATL-SAV/ATL-AVL Service Cuts ? Civil Aviation Forum ...

As per the OAG timetable Savannah now has one less daily flight along with AVL.

Delta used to operate multiple 757 flights daily and an MD-80 terminator flight via AGS (Augusta, GA) to SAV (Savannah, GA). What has happened here for DL to reduce capacity, yet charge a semi-heavy premium for this flight?

Concerning AVL down to 7 daily to ATL, albeit with one daily DC9 service, why does DL reduce frequency when AVL charges a premium for this flight? AVL does not have a low-cost carrier, except for Allegiant to Orlando, so what has happened in AVL for this reduction?

The 757 ATL-SAV-ATL was always full and the CR2 was always full for the most part (not speaking in terms of yield, but demand) so why are these cities seeing a single daily flight reduction?

And in terms of AVL, does RegionalElite ground staff still handle the single mainline flight, or are there newly hired DL Mainline staff handling the DC9 flight?

When you price flights for example AVL-LAX, the lowest average fare is $480 r/t in Econ. whilst SAV-LAX average is $480 r/t. In terms of yield why would DL reduce service for a destination that rewards DL with pax willing to pay the higher fare for sheer convenience, etc.?

Perhaps someone from Revenue Management can shed some light on these destinations.

Quoting AirAfreak (Thread starter):

That's cheap. Sometimes in the 90s i was quoted something like 550 US$ for ATL-SAV rtn by DL and chose instead the thrills of flying Valuejet for much less.
Quoting AirAfreak (Thread starter):
And in terms of AVL, does RegionalElite ground staff still handle the single mainline flight, or are there newly hired DL Mainline staff handling the DC9 flight?

Yes, Regional Elite is still handling the DL mainline flights in and out of AVL.
Quoting AirAfreak (Thread starter):

This is a relatively low level of service for AVL-ATL (up from 8-9x non-peak season to 10x daily on a CRJ in summer and fall), but not terribly surprising given DL has kept mainline on the schedule into the spring.
The DL of 2012 is not the DL of 2005, let alone even the DL of 2009.

DL, even with the merger of NW, has reduced systemwide capactiy and is focused on profitable flying. This is not the loss generating, bankrupt DL of a decade ago.

As fuel prices have increased, it has directly increased the cost of flying. Supply and demand, as the prices increase to cover costs, demand will decrease.

Additionally, SAV used to see FL serive and during that time, DL used to offer more capacity and lower fares to be competitive with FL. Now that FL is out of SAV, prices increased significantly with the lack of lower cost competition.

While the OAG threads are great, one must consider that adjustments are frequently made in all markets.
Adjustments are alway made on a seasonal / monthly / day-of-the-week basis. DL is very aggresive at matching capacity and making adjustments in frequency and equipment types on a given route.

Don't get too worried if a flight is reduced in the Jan/Feb timeframe, the slowest travel period of the year. Keep in mind that demand is often 20-30% less during this time than during the peak summer travel season since leisure travel is very low during this time of the year.

Even more so in markets like AVL and SAV which have a significant leisure travel segment of inbound visitors. The winter is off-peak for both markets.

Quoting AirAfreak (Thread starter):

AVL is getting mainline back, so they swapped out 2 CRJs (2 x 50 seats) for a DC-9-50 (125 seats). DL is going to be significantly reducing their 50 seat RJs over the next several years, so look for more of this to happen as 50 seaters are replaced by a combination of 66/70/76 seaters and some mainline equipment (DC9, 717).
Quoting AirAfreak (Thread starter):
And in terms of AVL, does RegionalElite ground staff still handle the single mainline flight, or are there newly hired DL Mainline staff handling the DC9 flight?

Outsourced vendor, whoever it is in AVL. It does not have to be mainline employees ground handling, and they will not bring it back in-house with only 1 or a handful of mainline flights.

DL has a massive amount of data at their disposal for capacity and yield management. I'd actually say that $480 r/t on SAV-LAX is actually not that bad, considering the actual cost of flying. $480 r/t /less taxes is roughly $440 to DL, which on roughly a 4000 mile round trip is around a 11-12 cent CASM. DL is barely breaking even, if at all on this fare. They certainly are not ripping anyone off on that fare, its pretty close to the cost of flying that route. SAV-LAX also has numerous competition as all the other airlines can get you there on connecting service over their respective hubs.

Now when you see the some of the short hops that lack competition that are more than $900 roundtrip, then you can say they are certainly charging a premium.

So this must be good news for the GSP market, as DL's ATL flights are now a mix of CRJ/CR9/D95 & MD88, and after Oct 1, will also see A319 and A320 added in as well! Looks like after that time, there will only be 1 flight/day (on weekdays anyway) without F class. What with that, plus WN and G4's mainline a/c, GSP is almost looking like the early 90s again!
I remember when I lived in Savannah in the 2003-04 range taking several 757 flights from SAV-ATL and back. And yes they were usually full. And usually went on to further destinations with same-plane service like SLC, SMF, and SJC.

SAV isn't a particularly large city or metro. Why the large(ish) equipment?

In addition to the millions of tourists that SAV and the Golden Isles get (and most of them fly in through either SAV or JAX as BQK is usually cost prohibitive) Savannah is GA's industrial center, there's a huge military presence, and it has the fastest growing port on the east coast. Savannah has a lot going on.

DL has also traditionally had a very large share (probably 50%+) of the SAV market. And with the nearest large airports being just over 2 hours' drive away (JAX and CHS, neither of which is a hub) and ATL 4 hours away, leakage is minimized. (The exception probably being some to WN in JAX.)

[Edited 2012-09-27 11:31:47]

A lot of people forget that the size of the city may not seem to corelate with the size of the airplanes.
DL is a southern company that has maintain a strong precense in many of it routes that date back 60+ years...
SAV/CHS/CAE/AGS/HSV/MGM/BHM/BNA/GSP are the bread and butter for DL.
ALL of FL stations represent more than 20% of the company revenue. I feel sorry you lost one flight in SAV, and one in
Asheville. But think about it, the company is constantly rightsizing itself.

The institution's level of engagement on social media bears a lot of weight with perspective students. Being able to connect with counselors quickly about the admissions process is hugely important, according to the study.

?Students want to be connected with other students,? Gil Rogers, director of College Outreach for Zinch told Inside Higher Ed. ?You can post a picture of an athletic event, but you also want to be able to connect students to ways that they can be part of that event or be part of that campus.?

Can Using the Internet for Business Hurt Your Bottom Line?

If you?ve been in the Internet business for any length of time, you?ve probably read helpful articles like the Five Advantages of Using the Internet for Business.

However, have you also noticed there are some disadvantages to this medium as well?

1. Building personal relationships

A truly successful business is built around personal relationships.

How do you create that in the world of anonymity that so many online shoppers enjoy?

Yes, you can write posts that speak to the heart of their concerns, but this doesn?t meet the level of a face-to-face meeting. It?s better to sit down and create a personal relationship?one that will encourage loyalty and a more personal interaction.

If you develop a professional ?friendship? with your clients, they are going to support both your offline and online presence.

Typically, this can only be done with a brick-and-mortar environment or a direct selling experience.

That?s why personal relationships can be categorized under the disadvantages of Internet entrepreneurs.

2. Security of records

The security of your company records in a brick-and-mortar business is based on how well you lock them up, where you store them and what systems are in place around the building.

In fact, you can even incorporate the help of a security deposit box to maintain security of those papers that must not be shared.

However, in an online office, you are vulnerable to attack from a myriad of directions. This requires a whole new level of digital security that can significantly increase your costs.

Also, you need to be vigilant and make sure the necessary updates are completed. Record attacks are not going to stop simply because they couldn?t get through the first time.

Instead, they are going to come back with a stronger attack force and attempt to break through your firewall more efficiently.

The disadvantages of Internet include online security because it requires you to stay on your toes and stay knowledgeable about your new potential attackers.

3. Expanding your company presence

In the brick-and-mortar world when you want to expand, you just build or purchase a new building. Then, you fill that location with your merchandise and start to market to a new customer base.

Once you start spreading the word and word-of-mouth referrals begin to pour in, you may find that people drive long distances just to see your unique collection of inventory.

This instantly gives you a chance to talk with them and meet their needs on a greater level. If they know you are ordering items that speak specifically to their needs, they will return again and bring more shoppers with them.

Clearly, this is one of the disadvantages of Internet companies?there is already enough established competition that already provides this service to them.

4. Spam and porn comment links

I?m not sure why they do, but spammers and pornography distributors take every single opportunity to post links to their pages, even if it?s on a completely unrelated content page.

On my blog, I?ve had people attempt to post about everything from business opportunities to obscene pictures when the post is about learning to write!

They do not have respect for anything but their page views, so you need to be extra vigilant and moderate every comment.

If you had a brick-and-mortar store, you would not have to keep people from standing in front with their banners and sending business to their own locations.

However, that same standard does not apply to online companies. Rather, you are open to spamming through comment links on a regular basis.

You can make money online but you need to be aware of the disadvantages of Internet companies just as much as the potential benefits.

Only an educated entrepreneur will be able to prepare for these and head them off before they create lasting damage.

If you have had any particular experience with these, please share them below!

We?d love to hear how you overcame the disadvantages to build a successful online company!

UConn Health Center Awarded Grant to Establish Early Childhood

The U.S. Department of Education has announced a $1.2 million grant to the University of Connecticut Health Center to establish an Early Childhood Personnel Center to serve as a national resource for professionals serving infants, toddlers, and preschool children with disabilities and their families.

According to a news release by the U.S. Department of Education, the Early Childhood Personnel Center will address a need identified in recent studies to strengthen the skills of the early childhood workforce to improve developmental and learning outcomes for the very young with disabilities.

?This is very exciting,? says Mary Beth Bruder, director of the University of Connecticut?A.J.?Pappanikou?Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities. ?The personnel center will receive $6 million over five years and we have five universities and 12 national organizations working with us.?

Key areas of focus for the center include:

  • Assisting states in aligning their personnel standards to national professional organization standards;
  • Assisting state agencies and institutions of higher education in developing partnerships with each other to support alignment between preservice and inservice training; and
  • Assisting states in developing integrated early childhood professional development systems.

Leadership Grants for Doctoral Students

The U.S. Department of Education also announced more than $3 million in grants to higher education institutions to help prepare graduate students for leadership positions in special education, early intervention and related services.

The Health Center, in collaboration with UConn?s Neag School of Education and Yale University, will receive $1.25 million over five years for eight interdisciplinary doctoral students in early childhood intervention, according to Bruder.

The grants are meant to help fill a need that has developed in the past 20 years for leadership personnel who are prepared at the doctoral and postdoctoral levels to fill faculty positions in special education, early intervention and related services. Similarly, the grants will also help train scholars to eventually serve as supervisors of personnel providing direct services to infants and children with disabilities.

Ultimately, the funds will help develop a corps of both highly qualified college faculty and future supervisors of personnel providing direct services to infants and children with disabilities.

Nutrition supplements fail to help famine-hit ... - Body Health & Fitness

    RECORDER REPORT

    Array())
?> Babies and toddlers at risk of malnutrition weren?t helped by special energy-dense food supplements given along with normal food aid, according to a new study on September 18.

Humanitarian groups usually provide staples, like grains and beans, to help families facing food shortages. But some groups wondered if specially-formulated supplements could help more kids stave off malnutrition.

These ?ready-to-use supplementary food? products, often with a peanut butter-base, are already used as an extra boost of calories, fats and nutrients to help get malnourished kids back on track. But new research indicates the food supplements, given as a preventative measure on a wider scale, may not have the hoped-for impact.

The study was published in the online journal PLOS Medicine. In Chad, where annual dry seasons leave a four-month ?hunger gap? between harvests, researchers monitored over 1,000 babies and toddlers aged six months to three years old.

Half of their families were given standard food rations, and the other half received the same rations, plus a daily dose ? about three spoonfuls ? of the special food supplements for the targeted children. At the end of the four months, despite the extra supplements, ?8.6 percent of both groups were found to be undernourished,? or below the desired threshold for height and weight, explained lead researcher Lieven Huybregts. ?We had to refer them to a treatment program outside the study,? the Ghent University researcher told AFP, which was the opposite of what they?d hoped for.

The kids who got the supplements did grow a bit taller, however, had better hemoglobin levels ? meaning a decreased risk of anemia ? and had lower rates of fever and diarrhea. These side-benefits could be traced to the extra vitamins and minerals packed into the supplements, Huybregts suggested. But it is not clear why the supplements didn?t help the kids gain weight. It may have their overall diet: the kids who got the supplements, which were spread among several children, ate less of the other rations, said Huybregts.

He said the researchers are analysing the data ?to see if the supplement was really consumed and what the pattern was.?

For now, he said, the data suggest widespread distribution of the food supplements, which are pricier than traditional food rations, may not be a cost-effective solution to famine in these hunger-prone areas. And if the side-benefits are related to the vitamins and minerals in the supplements, ?maybe there are more affordable strategies to provide micronutrients,? perhaps in syrup and tablet form, he said.

How to tell if your Samsung phone is vulnerable to today's USSD hack

    Android Central

A quick way to tell if your Samsung phone is at risk, and what to do if it is

There's a lot of confusion as to exactly which Samsung phones are affected by today's big scary USSD vulnerability, which could cause some phones to factory reset themselves upon visiting a malicious web page. Some Galaxy S2 and S3-class phones are susceptible, others less so. In some cases it depends if you're running the latest firmware or not. In others, there's no patched firmware available yet.

Samsung will surely be hard at work rolling out fixes for devices that remain susceptible, but in the meantime we've got a quick, easy to tell if your phone is at risk, without taking the plunge and running the malicious code itself. Find out more after the break.
