Washington: NASA Scientists and Engineers Receive Presidential Early Career Awards

??Washington: NASA Scientists and Engineers Receive Presidential Early Career Awards

President Obama has named six NASA individuals as recipients of the 2011 Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE). The NASA recipients and 90 other federal researchers will receive their awards in a ceremony later this month in Washington.

The PECASE awards represent the highest honor bestowed by the United States government on scientists and engineers beginning their independent careers. They recognize recipients' exceptional potential for leadership at the frontiers of scientific knowledge, and their commitment to community service as demonstrated through professional leadership, education or community outreach.

"These talented individuals have already made significant contributions to the agency's mission at this early stage in their careers," said NASA Chief Scientist Waleed Abdalati. "We look forward to celebrating their continued success for many years to come."

The 2011 NASA recipients were nominated by the agency's Science Mission Directorate, Office of the Chief Engineer, and Office of the Chief Technologist:

- Morgan B. Abney, NASA's Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Ala ., recognized for innovative technical leadership in advancing technologies for recovering oxygen from carbon dioxide for self-sustaining human space exploration.

- Ian Gauld Clark, NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory and California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, Calif ., recognized for exceptional leadership and achievement in the pursuit of advanced entry, descent and landing technologies and techniques for space exploration missions.

- Temilola Fatoyinbo-Agueh, NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Md ., recognized for exceptional achievement in merging scientific priorities with advanced technology to develop innovative remote-sensing instrumentation for carbon-cycle and ecosystems science.

- Jessica E. Koehne, NASA's Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, Calif ., recognized for exceptional dedication to the development of nano-bio sensing systems for NASA mission needs.

- Francis M. McCubbin, Institute of Meteoritics, University of New Mexico in Albuquerque, N.M ., recognized for studies of the geochemical role of water and other volatiles in extraterrestrial materials from the inner solar system.

- Yuri Y. Shprits, University of California, Los Angeles, recognized for early-career leadership and innovative research and modeling in the realm of the Earth's Van Allen radiation belts.

The PECASE awards were created to foster innovative developments in science and technology, increase awareness of careers in science and engineering, give recognition to the scientific missions of participating agencies, enhance connections between fundamental research and many of the grand challenges facing the nation, and highlight the importance of science and technology for America's future. Eleven federal departments and agencies nominated scientists and engineers for the 2011 PECASE awards. For a complete list of 2011 award winners, visit:

Mariah Carey Inks Deal With American Idol!

It is official Mariah Carey will be sitting at the judges table when American Idol returns in January. Talk about some fabulous breaking news for a Monday huh. TMZ was first to report the news that Carey has in fact inked a deal with AI. I guess that means the Fox reality show was able to meet her demands and by that I of course mean money demands. The official announcement was made at the TV Critics Association press tour, which is currently taking place in Beverly Hills. Although there are no official details of Mariah?s agreement being released the rumors are of course already running ramped on the Net. The biggest rumor is that Carey signed a deal for $12 million to be on the show. As you may or may not know this is the same amount that Jennifer Lopez earned her first year as a judge as well. I am sure we will have more deats on what the singer will get as a judge this year very soon. If you recall a few weeks ago Nick Cannon said the Fox show couldn?t afford his wife, well as it turns out they can. This is a big [...]

Why won't China sign the South China Sea code of conduct? (+video)

China dodged signing a code of conduct this week at the East Asia Summit, a regional security meeting.

Here they go again. Asian governments with overlapping claims to the South China Sea are working this week toward a code of conduct for handling the frequent upsets between competing naval ships.

The agreement, raised at the Association of South East Asian Nations in Cambodia, would be the 10th covering essentially the same territorial dispute since the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. The idea is that it would spell out what ships should do to avoid a clash but it wouldn't actually spell out how to resolve competing claims, according to regional news media.

So what?s the big deal behind this year?s deal ? besides calming nervous people onshore and making their leaders look like saintly peacemakers?

The deal doesn't really work unless China, the one that all the others are worried about, agrees to it.?But China is leaning against adding its signature. It wants to keep an upper hand in the dispute, especially with the recent US push to focus on Asia.

?China says there needs to be greater confidence and trust building ? there?s a sense that China is being told what to do,? says Bonnie Glaser, senior fellow with the think tank Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington.??The risk is, it becomes a voluntary agreement, and in that case, it's completely meaningless,? she adds.

Safety net against China?

Naval ships often track their countries? oil rigs and fishing expeditions. Oil, natural gas, and fish explain why the 3.5 million square kilometers (1.4 million square miles) of water stretching from Singapore to Taiwan are so sought after.?

The past three decades have seen countless military clashes:?One occurred in 1976, when China took the tiny, uninhabited Paracel Islands from Vietnam. Another came in 1988, when China and Vietnam clashed in the equally miniscule Spratly Islands, according to the US-based public policy organization GlobalSecurity.org. The 1988 incident sank Vietnamese boats and killed 70.?

The Coffee Chic: The Need for Home Improvement

One of the things that every home owner must always remember is to improve her house once in a while. It is important that she focuses on keeping her home as the best place for the whole family. There can never be comfort when the house needs renovation.

This is the main reason why my mom and I always consider the need for home improvement. Just recently, we gave our home a complete makeover. We started on the lawn. The first thing we did was to change its flooring into tiles. At the same time, we also added poly-carbonated roof ceilings to make the outdoor look better. Now, my friends and I can already party easier at the lawn. Aside from these, we have also decided to change the complete gate of our house. As of the moment, we are currently waiting for the completion of our new gate. There is so much happiness and excitement every time my mom and I make plans for our house.

How about you? Are you interested in giving your place the renovation and improvement it needs? If yes, then make sure you follow some of the tips provided on this post.

1. Search for possible designs before you start the work.

There are many magazines and websites that provide great home designs. Take hold of those resources so you can have many options to choose from. Focus on the details to avoid making wrong decisions.

2. Contact the best developer in town.

The secret to having a presentable home is hiring a professional to do the makeover for you. Inquire for the best developers or interior designers in your area and ask them to help you with the home improvement.?

3. Get the best materials.

Without the best tools and materials, you can never achieve what you want for your home. Always make sure that you canvass for the possible items which will be needed for the renovation. The things you will purchase may range from small to big like a small piece of tile to Hitachi Mini Excavators.

By focusing on home renovations and improvements, you can make your family members happy. Make your environment at its best so your husband and children can become more comfortable. They will surely look forward to coming home every day.
