I?m just back from the 5th British Shakespeare Association conference at the University of Lancaster. There were just under two hundred of us there (scholars, teachers, enthusiasts, and theatre practitioners). I took part in a panel about a new book which we hope heralds a new and fresh approach to Shakespeare criticism.
Shakespeare and I is a collection of essays by different scholars, but also a series of dreams, an anthology of attempts to communicate something real in language, a succession of illustrations which show why personal experience in relation to art, in relation to Shakespeare, matters. All the contributors to this volume share a sense of daring, a declaration that what they have seen and felt, combined with what they can rationally know and demonstrate, is important. All of the essays to a greater or lesser extent are about personal formation.
Through the course of this collection of essays, we encounter discussions about sexuality, class-distinctions, how we learn, how we remember, what forms and constitutes our theatrical memories, how Shakespeare attaches himself to our daily lives, how Shakespeare enhances our life, what it means to read with the heart, reading as a spiritual exercise, deeply submerged ghosts and memories, and Shakespeare providing a point of focus through grief.
Feelings are messy and often unforgettable, irrational, and will always escape any theoretical paradigm. ?Feelings? (unless they be historicized Early Modern ones) are also unprofessional and do not speak the right kind of language for academic conferences and publication.
To be truly honest about our feelings is to drop our defences. Writing which is honest, open and in our most fully possessed human language finds its place in the long tradition of confessional literature, memoirs, and essays, the kind of writing which was being re-invented in the Early Modern Period. In Shakespeare?s time confessional writing is perhaps best exemplified by Michel de Montaigne (1533?1592). Later comes Sir Thomas Browne (1605?1682) who, like Montaigne, wrote, as it were, with a mind so copious, generous and open that he felt his way around a subject intuitively, excluding nothing, including everything.
In his essay for Shakespeare and I, David Fuller recalls his former tutor, William Empson, in terms which evoke the Renaissance ideal of learning as something which engages the whole person and in which a love of poetry was an inextricable part of a wide-range of interests across what we now call disciplines. All of the essays here gathered share that same spirit of large-mindedness. ?Know thyself? says Socrates (to whom Shakespeare?s mind is compared on his memorial bust in Holy Trinity Church, Stratford-upon-Avon).
To write about Shakespeare from within, as these authors do, is not about only demonstrating an argument, rather its about establishing a framework in which one can say: ?Shakespeare means this to me because of such and such. Can you meet me here? Do you recognise what I?m saying? Can you connect with what I say??
As a Shakespearian, I am most attracted to reading Shakespeare closely, partly because this is what I have been trained to do and partly because this is where any Shakespearian activity starts from. The practice has for me found its most direct expression in my work on Shakespeare?s Sonnets (with Stanley Wells) and my own deep interest in Shakespeare in performance, reviewing the plays, and the sound of Shakespeare?s words and poetry. Actors perform Shakespeare through close readings of the text; to act Shakespeare is closely to read him. Unless you are performing a heavily adapted version of a play, the main reason for performing Shakespeare at all is, it seems to me, because the language is life-giving, is the theatrical energy of the thing, is what makes the characters real, tells us everything we need to know, and, in the ideal theatrical space, is what crackles around the auditorium (if the acoustic is good enough). Performance, then, is definitely a form of close-reading. And so is theatre reviewing, and so are all works of art or social practice which take Shakespeare as their starting point: creative writing, music, Shakespeare in prisons, or Shakespeare as psychotherapy. Any reflection on our own experiences is also a form of close-reading.
This kind of (self) reading has a long and distinguished tradition, and I think that part of its future will be its willingness and openness to absorb and engage with other forms of writing. I see a creative future for criticism, close-reading, and writing of this kind.
A subtitle for Shakespeare and I might be How Shakespeare Formed Me. The contributors ask ?Where have I come from? What part did Shakespeare play in that, and why? How might this help me relate to where other people are coming from?? Shakespeare and I requires its readers to be good listeners. Some readers might find it hedonistic. Perhaps it is. But this kind of hedonism is tempered with discernment, with the self listening carefully to itself, and creative expression. It requires no more justification than this: ?speak what we feel, not what we ought to say? (The Tragedy of King Lear, 5.3.299). Our revels now are started.

Other criteria can be very important, however. The executor should be trustworthy. If you have any doubts at all about this person?s character, pick someone else as your executor. Your executor should also be willing to take on the task. You might have a third cousin who?s a financial planner, but typically being an executor is a lot of hassle with little reward, so spouses, siblings, and children usually make better choices. Also, your executor should ideally be healthy and not too old. If you?re doing your will in your twenties, you might put a parent as an executor. But if you?re doing your will in your fifties, you should probably be looking to those who are your age or (even better) younger. Finally, proximity is extremely beneficial. If your executor lives in China and all your assets are in Alberta, perhaps you should consider someone closer to home.
Other factors that I have not discussed may be important as well, depending on your circumstances.

So why not embrace some of the stars who aren't at their prime and have?maybe made more headlines for questionable behavior than impeccable work? We do.

You have to admit, the bad boys often make watching the ballroom bash a lot more fun. ?(Hi, Maks!) Granted, Guns ?N Roses frontman Axl Rose may not fit very well into ?Dancing?s? skin-tight sequined costumes nowadays, but that?s nothing a few weeks on the dance floor won?t fix. And yes, he?d last a few weeks ... at least. Remember the slinky moves the rocker used to do?on stage and in music videos? It?s proof he can move! Our pro pick for him? Lacey Schwimmer. She?s a lively gal who knows how to have fun with her partners, plus she?s a recording artist, which will give her and Axl something to bond over during practice.

Want some fireworks to liven up the show? Who better than comedian Joan Rivers! You know she won?t be taking any unfair criticism from the judges without giving them a taste of their own medicine -- and then some! Forget any verbal sparring with the judges, Austin would probably storm the costume department to give the designers a piece of his mind, if not just whip up his own, tasteful looks himself. ?As for his partner, we?re thinking Anna Trebunskaya. The pro looks great in just about everything, which Austin will appreciate. Plus, her super sweet personality could help him loosen up a bit about his ballroom wardrobe.

OK, OK, now bear with us here. At first glance, it might not seem as though oft-embattled rocker Courtney Love is in prime ballroom condition. But don't let her past addiction issues, penchant for online rants and whatever happened to those poor pets of hers stand in her way. Courtney has more than a few qualities working in her favor. While she's not exactly known for cutting a rug, the Hole frontwoman knows a thing or two about musicality. She also knows how to speak up -- don't expect her to sit back and keep quiet if Carrie Ann Inaba praises a good looking guy who fumbles on the floor and then bashes?Courtney for the same moves. Most importantly, for all of?her ? eccentricities, she's never boring?-- a lesson would-be (well, could-be) partner Tony Dovolani would soon learn.?But don't worry about Tony. If?he can handle Kate Gosselin, he'd be just fine giving Courtney a spin across the floor.

Over the next 2000 years, key innovations introduced by steppe nomads such as chariots, domesticated horses, and advanced bronze metallurgy spread across the mountains and deserts of Inner Asia and influenced the political and economic character of ancient civilizations from China to Mesopotamia, Iran, and the Indus Valley.
Although the mobile societies that fueled these networks came to share certain ideological and economic institutions, in many cases their political organization remained autonomous and idiosyncratic. Still, these regional economic and social ties forged between neighboring mobile communities helped new ideologies and institutions propagate over vast territories, millennia before the fabled "Silk Road."

"The Woman in Black"
After a strong two thirds, this Hammer Studios film flails (and fails) badly, falling victim to serious third act contrivances which work to end the film, but to end it poorly. I'm not talking about (only) the final minutes, which were fine, but rather the plot mechanisms that led up to the resolution.
Overall, though, a strong, spooky, Gothic film that I'd probably recommend.
"The Human Centipede 2"
Strange reaction to this one. First off, I kinda loved it. It's a professionally produced, well acted, ridiculously funny and audacious piece of filmmaking. It's ludicrous in concept, explicit in execution and 'fuck you' in message. Filmmaker Tom Six boldly stated that he was going to go nuts-out on this sequel and stick it to the first movie haters who cried foul at some of the off screen violence. He certainly did.
Secondly, after watching an interview with Tom Six on the Blu-ray, I realized what an idiot the guy is. Whatever satirical or thematic credit I gave to him was washed away when hearing him speak. He's simply one of those guys you see at horror movie conventions producing nun-rape/shot-on-video movies for shock's sake. He just has financial backers.
Still. Pretty fun stuff. But, please, read up on it before you go taking my recommendation. It's very sick stuff.

WESTFIELD, New Jersey (AP) ? Whitney Houston was laid to rest Sunday at a brief private ceremony in New Jersey, the end of a weekend that saw the pop star's family and friends gather at a star-studded funeral to mourn her loss while celebrating her career.
Fans and onlookers gathered in several places along the route the motorcade took from the Newark funeral home to the cemetery about 20 miles (30 kilometers) away in Westfield, where Houston was buried next to her father, who died in 2003.
The 48-year-old singer died Feb. 11 in California, hours before she was to attend a pre-Grammy Awards party. No cause of death has been determined.
On Saturday, she was mourned at an invitation-only funeral at the church in Newark where she sang in the choir as a child. She was remembered by the biggest names in the music: Stevie Wonder and Alicia Keys sang, and industry mogul Clive Davis was among those who spoke, as was Kevin Costner, Houston's co-star in "The Bodyguard."
The funeral was closed to fans, who were not allowed within blocks of the church. Still, many came to Newark to take part in what ways they could, some from as far as Miami and Washington, D.C.
Fans gathered again near the funeral home Sunday morning, and some even slowly ran alongside the hearse as it began the journey to Houston's gravesite. Several yelled out "We love you, Whitney" as the hearse, which had a black and white headshot of the star in a window, slowly drove away.
Barbara Davis, 53, of Newark, said she had been waiting outside the funeral home since 8:30 a.m., hoping to get a glimpse of Houston's final trip.
"To be here at her home-going is an honor and a blessing," Davis told The Star-Ledger of Newark.
Also among the crowd was Newark resident Eva Aquino and her two granddaughters, ages 10 and 13. All three stood on a street corner as the hearse passed by, and they used cellphones to snap photos of the procession.
The girls were wearing T-shirts and buttons of Houston that their grandmother had bought from vendors outside the funeral home Saturday.
"We came here and bought all these things of her to cherish the memories," said 13-year-old Nalani Velez of Kearny.
The burial came a day after an emotional, nearly four-hour service at Newark's New Hope Baptist Church that ended with the strains of Houston's biggest record, "I Will Always Love You," filling the church.
Her mother, gospel singer Cissy Houston wailed, "My baby! My baby!" as she was held up by two women and led out of the church behind the casket bearing her daughter's body. A few steps behind her was the pop icon's daughter, Bobbi Kristina, also crying uncontrollably as she was comforted by Houston's close friend, singer Ray J.
Her death marked the end of a life of stunning achievement. Blessed with a voice of great power and beauty, Houston became one of pop music's most successful artists over a career that spanned nearly three decades and segued into film with hits like "The Bodyguard."
But her life was not without struggles. An addiction to drugs and a tumultuous union with ex-husband Bobby Brown saw her tumbling from grace.
Both sides of Houston were recalled at the service at New Hope, which was filled with about 300 mourners, including Oprah Winfrey, Tyler Perry, Mariah Carey, Mary J. Blige, Forest Whitaker, Jennifer Hudson, Diane Sawyer and Houston's cousin, Dionne Warwick.
"She was someone with a charmed and a beautiful life, sometimes misunderstood, even by herself," said her sister-in-law and manager, Patricia Houston. "But a life nevertheless that gave joy, happiness, enthusiasm, peace and beautiful music to millions of people around the world."
Costner, her co-star in "The Bodyguard," said that for all of Houston's beauty and success, she was still yearning for approval from the public and somewhat insecure, a superstar who "still wondered, 'Am I good enough? Am I pretty enough? Will they like me?'"
"It's a tree we could all hang from ? the unexplainable burden that comes with fame," he said. "Call it doubt. Call it fear. I've had mine. And I know the famous in the room have had theirs."
Many who spoke talked about Houston's unshakable faith in Jesus Christ. They said it got her through some of her most difficult times. Perry recalled a conversation where Houston would look sad when reflecting on her troubles, but then would hasten to add that God was taking care of her.

Fittingly, music played a major role in the send-off to one of music's greatest voices.
